Staffordshire farmers are seeing double as rare lambs are set to strike again during Spring event making a bumper quota of new arrivals for families this half term.
The National Forest Adventure Farm, in Tatenhill, is shocked to discover that they will once again be blessed with quadruplets this half term during New Life on the Farm.
Seen as rare in the UK most of the UK’s 16 million ewes giving birth this year will have just one or two lambs. However, the Robinson family is preparing to welcome four texel cross lambs next week after delivering four healthy lambs to one ewe during Lambing Live last year.
Farmer Tom Robinson, who runs the site with his brother Ivor, said: “Quads are very rare with most ewes delivering two or three lambs at most. It means we are in for a busy Spring with lots of new arrivals due.
“The team are exciting to be expecting quadruplets again and are busy preparing for their arrival as they tend to need a bit of extra care. We will need to help with bottle feeding as the mother will have her work cut out with so many hungry mouths to feed.
“Due to arrive during half term it is the perfect time to come down and meet the new arrivals and you might even catch a glimpse of the quads or be lucky enough to see them born.”
According to Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine quadruplet births for sheep happen about once in every 500 births with those odds doubling for all lambs surviving. The most common scenario is an ewe birthing 1 to 2 lambs.
New Life on the Farm starts on Saturday 14th February and runs through to Sunday 22nd February with lots of new Spring arrivals and farming activities to keep families entertained. The Lambing Live tent will be open allowing visitors to meet some of the 140 expectant ewes this month and maybe even see a new Spring lamb being born. The ‘ewe’ tube channel will also allow families to look online 24/7 to see what is happening as the farm prepares to deliver over 250 new arrivals.
There will also be baby calves, kid goats, piglets and chicks with activities including mini scarecrow making and animal handling.
Entrance to New Life on the Farm also includes all the usual farm favourites including pedal Go-karting, frisbee golf, Jurassic Canyon sand fossil dig, tractor rides, animal barn, giant jumping pillows Karts and JCB Big Dig Zone.
Tickets start from £12.50 and can be booked online.
